Taken from the "About" section of their website:<br /><br />"When the band is on tour we stop at rivers and skip stones competitively. On days off, Adam bakes bread and prepares dinner while Willis builds percussive instruments using only bottle caps and intuition, and Thao awkwardly lifts the one 10-pound weight she has brought along to stay in shape for shows. Everyone watches the Food Network and the Discovery Channel together for dessert. The three of us share many hopes; most center around getting co-starring roles in a Mentos commercial and sleeping in separate beds while traveling."<br /><br />Nevermind <span style="font-weight: bold;">Thao</span>'s tastefully subdued sound and amazing versatility, I want to hang out with these people!<br /><br /><object width="400" height="220"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NjzKkyQoe1U&hl=en_US&fs=1&"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NjzKkyQoe1U&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="400" height="220"></embed></object>Joycehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03974894189898000829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4482090838265950234.post-90063192999124712542010-03-22T21:31:00.000-07:002010-03-22T22:02:10.043-07:00Rocketship<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGpNFGIjSVIPB1_gHLhgw53W3-o2dZDINk5lGPeOqW6AqxCEwzTViT_pYjKhkfckSnHqU2u6kIwW3vy2BBL9sgOlBAfp7vm13vfs986g9LhPe9v0E2y_wb0ohGDWNsCm7k8ErYIyfqDJg/s1600-h/rocketship.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 270px; height: 289px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGpNFGIjSVIPB1_gHLhgw53W3-o2dZDINk5lGPeOqW6AqxCEwzTViT_pYjKhkfckSnHqU2u6kIwW3vy2BBL9sgOlBAfp7vm13vfs986g9LhPe9v0E2y_wb0ohGDWNsCm7k8ErYIyfqDJg/s320/rocketship.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451688550635519026" border="0" /></a>Now, if you've been rocking your "Twee as Fuck" shirt since the 90's, you already know who I'm talking about. For everyone else, if you want an indie-pop cult classic, you want <span style="font-weight: bold;">Rocketship</span>. Emerging in the early 90s, Rocketship became one of the brightest bands of the indie pop scene. A little bit shoegazer rock and a little bit bedroom pop, Rocketship is your one-way ticket into the International Pop Underground.<br /><br /><object width="400" height="240"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/H4X3qdACgOo&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/H4X3qdACgOo&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="400" height="240"></embed></object><br /><br />Unfortunately, Dustin Reske eventually took on Rocketship as a solo project and now releases music in the ambient direction.Joycehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03974894189898000829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4482090838265950234.post-20978106268799668202010-03-21T10:11:00.000-07:002010-03-21T10:37:09.479-07:00Telekinesis<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpil0YzcS-bgIqgM8en0-fTCHMbqa-78ouuPwghDzEzCNNFANVbVPBk9H9_aIFvej5mKIQ27rBI7-dBFCtD-WZZFhXPgecDbCZlQMOe5I1i2UdQEvYz67uGn_x8v5eZexZ5IU3cHXELMM/s1600-h/Telekinesis.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpil0YzcS-bgIqgM8en0-fTCHMbqa-78ouuPwghDzEzCNNFANVbVPBk9H9_aIFvej5mKIQ27rBI7-dBFCtD-WZZFhXPgecDbCZlQMOe5I1i2UdQEvYz67uGn_x8v5eZexZ5IU3cHXELMM/s320/Telekinesis.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451137267098459586" border="0" /></a><span style="font-weight: bold;">Telekinesis </span>is a Seattle-based one-man band with Michael Benjamin Lerner (pictured above with his touring band) on drums, guitar, and vocals. What resulted was a quietly intricate collection of tracks that are brimming with musical experimentation. His lyrics, both poetic and whimsical, add a charmingly quirky aspect to his multi-faceted melodies. Titled <span style="font-style: italic;">Tempest and Winter</span> for its exploration of life's storms and the soul's winter, the finished album is a journey through periods of doubt and depression, waiting and self-discovery. </p> <p>Originally hailing from Abbotsford, B.C., he got his start playing in the Indie-rock three-piece Sub Rosa before embarking on a solo career. The musician now calls Calgary, Alta. his home, and there has developed a loyal fan following as well as significant play time on the Canadian college radio circuit and podcasts. </p> <p>While his music has been said to resemble the likes of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sufjan Stevens</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Andrew Bird</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Simon & Garfunkel</span>, Jordan continues to present a unique sound that escapes comparison." They formed in a small Canadian town in the early 2000s and began to gain popularity locally and on the internet. Since moving to Toronto in 2004 they have released an EP and a full-length album, and toured with the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Tokyo Police Club, and Hot Chip.<br /><br />Some may find their sound annoying, but once you get past the sharp vocals there are catchy basslines, shout-along lyrics, and upbeat, addicting guitar riffs to be discovered. I can vouch for the replayability of this band. I've been listening to their tracks on a semi-regular basis for the past two years. Just wait until <span style="font-style:italic;">Say It</span> comes out...<br /><br /><object width="400" height="250"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lXAStBDZRsI&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lXAStBDZRsI&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="400" height="250"></embed></object>Joycehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03974894189898000829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4482090838265950234.post-87718134879911933912010-01-28T10:44:00.000-08:002010-03-21T10:38:47.597-07:00Los Campesinos! I sat down at midnight on the 26th, plugged in my bass headphones, and listened to all 16 songs (including the bonus track) straight. I can't say that it was love at first listen, but it's definitely love now. The romance I have with this album is anything but boring.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Romance is Boring</span> is the epitome of LC! at their best, lot's of anger. It's definitely their most moody album as of yet. It's a nice contrast to all the pleasant, soft, folk music I've been listening to lately. Sometimes you just need to listen to Gareth whining. Of course, there's also all the layers of catchy sound LC! manages to fit together without making the song noisy. It's brilliant.<br /><br />I have to say, though, my favorite part of the whole album is the beginning of "This Is a Flag. There Is No Wind." Yes, the highlight of the album is three seconds long, the highlight being the yelling of "CAN WE ALL PLEASE JUST CALM THE FUCK DOWN?!" I don't think a Los Campesinos! album would be complete without group yelling.<br /><br />I also feel the need to mention the song "The Sea Is a Good Place to Think of the Future." Something about it sets it apart from the rest of the album. I don't mean to sound cliche, but it's a beautiful track. The lyrics and the strings in the background, something about it makes so special. And they've got a video to go along with it.<br /><br /><object height="250" width="400"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/N6booM03nKI&hl=en_US&fs=1&"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/N6booM03nKI&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" height="250" width="400"></embed></object><br /><br />I managed to see them on their North American tour this past August, and they were simply wonderful. Since then, Aleks has left the band to go back to school. Kim, Gareth's sister, has since taken her place on keyboard and vocals. Can't wait to see them again in May.Joycehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03974894189898000829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4482090838265950234.post-53774109341834308602009-10-23T07:47:00.000-07:002009-10-23T12:57:04.958-07:00Wave Machines<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV43d5B-0heDJjpzi8acg6cSXxnmUImzmztm2EpWRz2F1NGGXcMrp1Gah-KnOJ5MouaLuJfA6A3FM8sZ3BdsnoBGMB-M03MgY75Ojb02aLKhx0oecFrkwxoNGyjSIHsyvLnqlW7EYFepM/s1600-h/wavemachines.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV43d5B-0heDJjpzi8acg6cSXxnmUImzmztm2EpWRz2F1NGGXcMrp1Gah-KnOJ5MouaLuJfA6A3FM8sZ3BdsnoBGMB-M03MgY75Ojb02aLKhx0oecFrkwxoNGyjSIHsyvLnqlW7EYFepM/s320/wavemachines.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395877478489667394" border="0" /></a><br />As odd as they are, I can't help but love the quartet of masked Liverpudlians that make up <span style="font-weight: bold;">Wave Machines.</span> A few months back they released their debut album, <span style="font-style: italic;">Wave if You're Really There, </span>brimming with electro-pop greatness. If I had to pick just one band with a mandolin to listen to for the rest of my life (which would be horrid, as I adore mandolins) I would have to pick Fanfarlo. Sorry, Spinto Band.<br /><br />With a violin, glock, mandolin, clarinet, trumpet, accordion, "fanfarlophone," and some contraption with a giant saw, their sound never gets old. I'm not going to lie though, they sound a little like Beirut, but a bit less serious and a bit more heavy on percussion. Still, they had fabulous energy live, very jumpy and catchy. And they had an amazing clarinet bit.<br /><br /><center><object height="250" width="400"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mn6Z-MW0EFw&hl=en&fs=1&"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mn6Z-MW0EFw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" height="250" width="400"></embed></object></center><br /><div style="text-align: center;">And I managed to score this gem.<br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisXlQxZdkJvB6xYuPijxAA6h3ARFYsT5DBV7TlfznXCr-Xhe9cAcO9i7SixqWC0JT-wdASwDgP4AjQYM53lkcJAXbsw6AJMJUjRmjFq2lyHrXaRP1b9295v7-JSR4rNlKHH5XwK19h0FY/s1600-h/fanfarloalbum.jpg.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 270px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisXlQxZdkJvB6xYuPijxAA6h3ARFYsT5DBV7TlfznXCr-Xhe9cAcO9i7SixqWC0JT-wdASwDgP4AjQYM53lkcJAXbsw6AJMJUjRmjFq2lyHrXaRP1b9295v7-JSR4rNlKHH5XwK19h0FY/s320/fanfarloalbum.jpg.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395647217305048706" border="0" /></a>Joycehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03974894189898000829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4482090838265950234.post-74651375556008035892009-10-22T20:21:00.000-07:002009-10-23T12:58:38.274-07:00Mix: Alright to Hold Tight<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeRbqEsB96sklefZYEHBZOoR2B6wpXmI-gKLA-llfx-k1mlV6HnQGSkCyfpLIFV_1n9coYyBmvNko7-1LQ_VzekpseCwRyRu9PmRVj1uWHMa51UY5rqWvj54m9CWKdyGVCKrM5QYYpGUQ/s1600-h/imgfave25.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeRbqEsB96sklefZYEHBZOoR2B6wpXmI-gKLA-llfx-k1mlV6HnQGSkCyfpLIFV_1n9coYyBmvNko7-1LQ_VzekpseCwRyRu9PmRVj1uWHMa51UY5rqWvj54m9CWKdyGVCKrM5QYYpGUQ/s320/imgfave25.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395632235652359570" border="0" /></a>We all have <span style="font-style: italic;">those</span> songs. A relatively young band, Johnny Foreigner formed in 2006 and debuted in the United States in 2007, touring with such power players as Los Campesinos! and The Spinto Band. The same year they signed with Best Before Records and in 2008 released their first full album <span style="font-style: italic;">Waited Up 'Til It Was Light.<br /><br /></span>The album contains gems of energetic beats, busy melodies, and mildly-whiny British accents reminiscent of Los Campesinos! With both Kelly Southern and Alexei Berrow taking the mic, a pleasing contrast of punk and a-little-less-punk is made, which is brilliantly illustrated in one of my favorites, "Salt, Pepa, and Spinderella." Don't get me wrong the album has it's tender moments with one of their more understated songs, "DJs Get Doubts." Overall the album has its fair share of interesting hooks, beats, melodies, and very interesting lyrics that will leave you anything but bored.<br /><br /><center><object width="400" height="250"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/J-PY53SdyUY&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/J-PY53SdyUY&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="400" height="250"></embed></object></center><br /><br />Since their debut album, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Johnny Foreigner</span> has since finished recording their second album that is set to be released in the fall of 2009 and have been touring the UK.Joycehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03974894189898000829noreply@blogger.com0
